Seed and heritage preservation is very important to us. We use sustainable farming practices which includes adding compost, manure and natural mulch materials to our growing beds. In the fall we plant cover crops (usually wheat, clover and/or field radish) and use a large amount of leaf litter on the beds. We take soil samples each year to see what needs adjustments. Our soil is acidic and low in Calcium, Sulfur, Boron and Zinc, corrections are made each fall and spring. We are not organic but do use low impact practices. We do use conventional fertilizer but rarely other chemicals. If it is absolutely necessary, we will use an organic pyrethrum insecticide to save a crop but many years we use none at all.
